Educating Young Listeners

KinderKonzerts

These are six Symphony performances for pre-school children at the beginning of the holiday season. More than 5,000 flock to Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts to see the Amarillo Symphony perform holiday favorites. The different instrument sections are featured to introduce these young concertgoers to each instrument and the sound it makes alone, and in the bigger ensemble. This light-hearted concert encourages the students to sing – and conduct – along with the orchestra. The highlight of the concert is when Santa Claus leads the orchestra. KinderKonzerts are a program of the Amarillo Symphony Guild.

Concerts For Young People

Six full symphonic performances are produced in the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts for fourth and fifth graders from Amarillo, Canyon and the Panhandle. More than 7,400 children attend these concerts in early January each year. The program's repertoire is strategically chosen to keep this age group engaged, entertained, and enlightened about the beauty of orchestral music.

String Family

An Amarillo Symphony string quintet visits more than 40 elementary schools annually to give second and third grade students an introduction to the different string instruments. This interactive presentation encourages the students to think about how music interacts in their lives, specifically in relation to holidays, celebrations, and ceremonies. The students learn the names of the instruments, the relative ranges of pitch, and how the bow works to make the strings sound. They also see how music’s power can, with the playing of a simple melody, transport them from feelings of reverence to overpowering joy.
