Executive Director
William F. Russell was hired in late December 2008. He has worked with arts groups across the country, especially in the opera field. As director of finance and administration with the Los Angeles Opera, he eliminated a $1.5 million debt. As general and artistic director for Opera Columbus in Columbus, Ohio, he eliminated a $1.9 million deficit within two years and rescued the company from bankruptcy. He also increased that company’s ticket sales by 45 percent and commissioned and produced an award-winning world-premiere opera, Vanqui. He also has served for more than 20 years as a consultant and on-site evaluator for the National Endowment for the Arts.
Director of Operations
Susan Buelow joined the Symphony in 2005. Prior to her hiring in Amarillo she worked with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra as its first director of education. In Amarillo, she coordinates all aspects of concert production and the symphony’s education programs. She is on the steering committees of the YMCA Arts & Humanities Task Force and the Globe-News Center’s Windows on a Wider World.
Director of Development and Communications
Chip Chandler joined the Symphony in 2006. Previously, he was the arts and entertainment writer for the Amarillo Globe-News for eight years, where he helped found Get Out!, the paper’s weekly entertainment supplement. A native of Canadian, he is a board member of the Texas Plains chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and Panhandle AIDS Support Organization.
