Mark Bartley
Associate Conductor
Dr. Mark Bartley joined the Amarillo Symphony as Associate Conductor in the summer of 2007. He is the first ASO conductor to be appointed to that position. He leads the Amarillo Symphony Orchestra in numerous educational concerts and special events during the season. Bartley also assists Music Director Kimbo Ishii-Eto in preparing the orchestra for subscription concerts as cover conductor. He directed the Amarillo Youth Symphony for the last three seasons.
Bartley has conducted professional orchestras around the world, including the Bacau Philharmonic (Romania), the China Opera and Dance Symphony Orchestra (Beijing) and the Harbin Opera Orchestra (China). He has also conducted ensembles from Cornell, Yale, Boston University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the New England Conservatory.
In the fall of 2006, Bartley joined the faculty at West Texas A&M University as Director of Orchestral Activities. He directs the WTAMU Symphony, teaches conducting and supervises student teachers. From 2001-2006, Bartley served on the faculty of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts where he was the director of the Orchestra and the Chorale, and taught conducting courses. Prior to moving to Massachusetts in 2000, Bartley directed various academic, religious, and community musical organizations in Austin, Houston, and George West, Texas.
Bartley holds a doctorate from Boston University and bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Texas. At those institutions he studied with Craig Hella Johnson, Ann Howard Jones, and David Hoose. He participated in further studies with Helmut Rilling, Donald Portnoy and Ovidiu Balan; and is a fellow in Alice Parker's Melodious Accord. He remains active as a clinician and adjudicator, with previous engagements as far away as Hawaii and Alaska.
